Mormons, First and Foremost, Are Christians

“And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ… that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.” (2 Nephi 25:26)

One common misconception of Mormons is that we are not Christians. This might be due to the church’s nickname (the “Mormons,” as opposed to the church’s actual name, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints”), or a simple lack of understanding about our beliefs.

Regardless, we humbly declare to the world that we are believers in and followers of Jesus Christ. Three core tenets of our belief are:

Because of our belief in Jesus Christ as Savior of the world, we also believe in the Bible (Old and New Testaments), in baptism in His name, in the holy Sacrament, in His literal atonement and resurrection, and in His Second Coming.

Because we adhere to strict moral code (no alcohol or tobacco; abstinence from pre- or extra-marital sex; generally wholesome lifestyles, etc.), many people incorrectly think that Mormons believe they can “earn” their way into heaven. While we do believe that works follow faith (Moroni 10:33; James 2:20), we know that we are perfected in Christ through the grace of God. (Read more about this elsewhere on this site)

Through the restoration of the Gospel, we have leaned many great and wonderful truths about the nature of God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. We believe that they are three separate beings, and that Jesus Christ is the literal son of God the Father. Jesus was the creator of the world, and was ordained in the pre-existence to be its Savior by performing the works of the atonement and resurrection.

We invite you to learn more about Jesus Christ by speaking to one of our members, or by reading and praying about some of the resources below.
